NYNGA welcomes annual NNGA / CGA Conference to NYS!
The 2024 Joint Conference of the Northern Nut Growers Association (NNGA) and the Chestnut Growers of America (CGA) will be held Sunday, July 21 - Wednesday, July 24 at State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. The conference will begin with registration on Sunday afternoon, followed by a welcome reception that evening. All-day technical sessions on Monday and Tuesday are being planned and attendees should anticipate the traditional Sunday evening Show & Tell, Monday evening auction, and Tuesday evening banquet. Wednesday is reserved for field trips. Everyone is invited to a morning tour of the campus laboratory at ESF followed by a field tour at the chestnut research site. In the afternoon, choose whether to check out the hazel/chestnut orchard and seedlings at Z's Nutty Ridge, dig into the operational details of a producing orchard of zone 5b cold hardy Chinese/Chinese hybrid chestnuts at Finger Lakes Nut Farm, or participate in a tree to table black walnut experience at Black Squirrel Farms. As an event host, NYNGA will not hold an independent 2024 Summer Meeting and will seek conference volunteers. More information is available here and conference registration is available here. Register before June 16 to save $50 on conference registration and NYNGA members are eligible for an additional $10 registration discount.
Calling All Butternut Tree Owners
Check the genetic background of your butternut trees and support butternut research! Aziz Ebrahimi, a post-doctoral fellow at Purdue University in Indiana, has been researching various species of walnuts, including Persian walnut, eastern black walnut, and other species of Juglans from both America and Asia. His current research focuses on butternut trees (Juglans cinerea) and analyzing the genetic diversity and landscape genetics of the remaining butternut trees in the eastern forest region. Butternut trees can be pollinated with Japanese walnut trees, making it hard to distinguish between them. If you have butternut trees on your property or nearby and want to learn more about their genetic background, please contact Aziz at aebrahi@purdue.edu or 765-409-5277. The analysis will require 2-3 mature leaflets from each tree, stored in ziploc bags with dry silica gel which Aziz can provide upon request. He can also provide more detailed instructions regarding how to collect the leaves. He will need information about tree location, such as address/county/state and/or GPS coordinates. The New York Nut Growers Association appreciates your support of the development of a disease resistance breeding program to protect a valuable species.
